Personal and professional papers of William Gillet Ritch and his collection of historical manuscripts, documents, and maps related to the history of New Mexico. The early portion of the collection (1539-1700) contains original manuscripts, contemporary copies, and later translations of official documents and journals of explorers, correspondence, papers of various governors, court records, church inventories, and passport lists of American traders. The papers for the years 1846-73 cover the American military occupation, New Mexico politics and government, New Mexico during the US Civil War, and Indian affairs (particularly relating to the Navajo, Apache, Comanche, and Pecos tribes). Items after 1873 tend to be the personal papers of William G. Ritch, including biographical sketches of significant New Mexicans, drafts of articles, and notebooks of research materials (including the biography of Father Antonio Jose Martinez by Santiago Valdez).

Antonio José Martínez was born in Abiquiu, N.M. in 1793. His family moved to Taos in 1804. Upon completion of his studies at the seminary in Durango, Mexico he returned to N.M., first to Tomé, then Abiquiu and finally Taos. William Gillet Ritch was territorial secretary of New Mexico from 1873 to 1885 and author of several books about New Mexico history. Ritch also served as acting territorial governor of New Mexico in 1875. He developed an interest in the history of New Mexico and collected historical documents in hopes of circumventing their destruction or dispersal. J.W. (James Wallace) Raynolds was born in Pueblo, Colo., 1873. The family relocated to Las Vegas, New Mexico. J.W. Raynolds graduated from MIT in 1896 and returned to New Mexico. He was appointed assistant secretary of the territory under George H. Wallace. When Wallace died in 1901, Raynolds was appointed secretary by President McKinley. Carleton was born in Lubec, Maine. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1839, during the Aroostook War, and took part in the Mexican–American War.
